Why I Call It Gothic

The Gothic has always been concerned with inheritance. Houses that remember. Families that repeat themselves. Sins that outlive the people who committed them.

New Asian Gothic shares these concerns, but places them within Asian social structures. The family is not only emotional, but hierarchical. The community is not optional. Leaving does not erase obligation.

The horror arises when inherited roles collide with personal survival. When tradition demands obedience that the present can no longer afford.

Calling this work Gothic is not a borrowing of atmosphere. It is an acknowledgment of structure. The past presses inward. The present cannot escape it.
